The Academy of Country Music Awards, usually the ACM Awards, were originally presented in 1966 to recognize the industry's achievements from the previous year. For a large organization, it was a first: a country music awards show. 1968 the iconic "hat" trophy was initially designed for the Academy. In 1972, ABC was the first network to broadcast the awards. They oversaw the 1979 transfer to NBC, the 1998 transfer to CBS, and the 2022 transfer to Amazon Prime Video.

In 2003, the Academy commissioned a new, more contemporary "hat" trophy from the Society Awards, a company based in New York City. In 2004, the group became the first broadcast awards program to allow members to vote for prizes online. After eight years of having fans vote for Entertainer of the Year, the ACM stated in 2016 that they would no longer be accepting online votes for this award or any of the three new artist categories.

The most esteemed honors are bestowed upon "Entertainer of the Year" and "Artist of the Decade." Albums, videos, songs, and performers (both male and female) can be honored with a plethora of other accolades. Usually given out in April or May, the awards commemorate the previous year's accomplishments. On May 11, 2023, the Ford Center at the Star in Frisco, Texas, hosted the 58th Annual Country Music Awards.
