Mitski Miyawaki (September 27, 1990) is an American singer and songwriter born in Mie Prefecture, Japan. She learned Japanese as her first language. Due to her father's position with the US Department of State, she spent her childhood bouncing between Turkey, China, Malaysia, the Czech Republic, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo before settling in the US. At 18, she penned her first song on the piano in Ankara, Turkey, where she had been residing since graduating from high school, where she had sung in the chorus.

Mitski shared that her new single, "Working for the Knife," would be released on October 5, 2021, as the lead single off her sixth studio album. Pitchfork would eventually rank the song as the seventh-best song of 2021. Mitski quickly followed the single's release with news of a North American and European tour for 2022. On November 9, 2021, she released a follow-up titled "The Only Heartbreaker."

The first single, "Bug Like an Angel," from Mitski's upcoming seventh studio album, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, was released on July 26, 2023. The album was revealed on July 23, 2023. She announced the news in a voice memo she recorded in Nashville, Tennessee's Bomb Shelter Studio, where the album was produced. Her newsletter listeners were subjected to the voice memo.
