North Carolina Symphony Information
The North Carolina Symphony is an American orchestra. It is based in Raleigh, North Carolina. The orchestra was founded in 1932. It has sixty-six full-time musicians. All of their concerts take place in Meymandi Concert Hall. The orchestra occasionally performs with the Carolina Ballet and the Opera Company of North Carolina. The concert series by the North Carolina Symphony is also performed across other cities such as Fayetteville, Wilmington, New Bern, Southern Pines, Cary, Chapel Hill, and many others. The orchestra also became the first orchestra in the 1940s to receive continuous state funding.
The North Carolina Symphony started focusing on education in 1942. They started to bring young students and children into the concert hall. They began to coordinate with elementary schools. Governor Terry Sanford and First Lady Margaret Rose Sanford hosted the annual North Carolina Symphony Ball in 1961 that serves as a fundraiser for the symphony. The orchestra is reputed for playing various genres. It has released several albums, such as Sonata with cellist Zuill Bailey and Britten’s Cello Symphony. Sonata debuted at number 1 on the Billboard Traditional Classical chart.
Around 200 annual performances of the North Carolina Symphony are devoted to students. The orchestra included “Instrument Zoo,” which was incorporated to engage young people’s interest in orchestral instruments. They also hold a Youth Concerto Competition where students are invited to observe rehearsals. Music directors who have served the North Carolina Symphony over the years include Lamar Stringfield (1932-1938), Benjamin Swalin (1939-1972), John Gosling (1972-1980), Gerhardt Zimmermann (1982-2003), and Grant Llewellyn (2004-present).
