Cleo Hearn was a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association since 1959 and a rodeo producer since 1971. He realized his dream with the Cowboys of Color Rodeo. To be welcoming of various cultures, he changed the name of the Texas Black Rodeo to Cowboys of Color Rodeo in 1995. The rodeo was created to "teach while entertaining," highlighting varied cultural contributions often overlooked in history texts. The Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association (PRCA) uses the Cowboys of Color Rodeo as a training ground, with over 200 culturally diverse cowboys and cowgirls of various hues vying for monetary prizes.

Traditional rodeo events include bull riding, bareback bronc bustin', calf ropin', steer wrestlin', women barrel racing, and junior breakaway calf ropin' and junior barrel racin' for kids 16 and under. Our aim is that some of our younger competitors will continue their rodeo careers after high school and college.

Between rodeo events, historical facts and cultural performances are offered to educate the audience about a history they may not be familiar with. Cowboys of Color Rodeos bring together people from all walks of life to celebrate our shared American Western heritage.
