The Georgia Southern Eagles football team represents Georgia Southern University in the Sun Belt Conference. Clay Helton is the current head coach. The Eagles have generated two Walter Payton Award winners and six FCS (I-AA) national titles. Georgia Southern originally regularly had a football team in 1924, but play was interrupted by World War II and did not resume until 1981.

The Eagles had a similar 7-5 record in the 2020 season, declining to 4-4 conference play. An outstanding 38-3 triumph over the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs in the New Orleans Bowl marked Lunsford's team's cap on the season. The squad's fortunes shifted in 2021 when Lunsford's sacking resulted from a 1–3 start to the season. Kevin Whitley, a cornerbacks coach, assumed temporary head coach duties. 

Former USC Trojans head coach Clay Helton was hired by Georgia Southern as the next head Coach on November 2, 2021, leading Georgia Southern to a 45-42 shock victory over Nebraska on September 10, 2022; Clay Helton attracted national notoriety. Following their 2013 triumph against Florida, the victory was Georgia Southern's second time surpassing a Power 5 university.
