The Johnstown Tomahawks is a Tier II junior ice hockey team in the North American Hockey League's East Division. The team plays its home games in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, at the 1st Summit Bank Arena located at Cambria County War Memorial. Formerly, the franchise was called the Dearborn Magic, Dearborn Heights Nationals, and Michigan Nationals, when they played in Dearborn, Michigan. In 1996, the team became St. Louis Sting, and in 2001, they relocated to Springfield, Missouri, as the Springfield Spirit. Once again, the team moved to Wasilla, Alaska as the Wasilla Spirit and then rebranded itself to the Alaska Avalanche the following season.

The Alaska Avalanche played at the Curtis D. Menard Memorial Sports Center in Wasilla until the 2009-2010 season. They moved to Palmer, Alaska, playing at the Palmer Ice Arena. Eventually, in 2012, the team moved to Johnstown, Pennsylvania. It took Johnstown Chiefs' (ECHL) spot after the team moved to Greenville, South Carolina, in 2011. Since then, the team is known as the Johnstown Tomahawks.

The Johnstown Tomahawks played its first game on September 8, 2012, against the Port Huron Fighting Falcons. The match was lost by the Tomahawks 4-3 in overtime. The team secured its first victory by a 6-5 shootout on September 13, 2012, against the Kenai River Brown Bears. The Tomahawks played their first home game at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena on September 29, 2012. Johnstown Hockey Group LLC currently owns the team, and Mike Letizia is the current head coach.
