The Missouri State Bears football team plays for Missouri State University, which is situated in Springfield, Missouri. Missouri State is a Missouri Valley Football Conference member and competes in NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).

Southwest Missouri State was the school's name until 2005 when it was renamed Missouri State. The inaugural football team at Missouri State was fielded in 1909, and Walter Langston was the first coach in program history, going 4–2 in his lone season as head coach. The squad competed as an Independent before 1923. Missouri State was part of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association from 1923 to 1980 and was a founding member of the organization. From 1958 until 1972, the Bears were a member of the NCAA College Division. The Bears competed in NCAA Division II from 1973 until 1980.

Missouri State has a 479–526–39 overall record and has won ten conference championships. In 2020, they won their most recent conference title. From October 15 to October 29, 1990, Missouri State was ranked second in the USA for three weeks. This remains the school's highest ranking ever. The squad has been playing its home games at the 17,500-seat Robert W. Plaster Stadium since 1941. In their history, the Bears have had 21 head coaches, including current head coach Bobby Petrino.
