Michael Gerard “Mike” Tyson (June 30, 1966) is an American former professional boxer who represented the United States in boxing from 1985 to 2005. He was born in Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York. Tyson lived in neighborhoods with a high rate of crime throughout his childhood. According to Tyson himself, his first fight of the life was with one of the bigger youths who had pulled his pigeon’s head.

Tyson had been involved in petty crimes and fighting with the people who bullied him due to his high-pitched voice. He had been arrested 38 times by the age of just 13 years. Tyson, as a boxer, was discovered by Bobby Stewart, who was a former boxer as well as a juvenile detention center counselor. He told himself that Tyson would be an outstanding fighter. Stewart began training him and continued for a few months before he introduced Tyson to Cus D’Amato. Tyson kept training himself under trainers such as Teddy Atlas and Kevin Rooney.

Tyson had already won gold medals during the 1981 and 1982 Junior Olympic Games. In 1981, he defeated Cortez, and in 1982 he defeated Kelton Brown. He also fought twice with Henry Tillman as an amateur but lost both bouts. On March 6, 1985, Tyson made his professional debut in Albany, New York, at the age of 18. In his first year as a professional, he had 15 bouts, winning 26 out of 28 fights by TKO or KO; 16 fights out of those 26 fights were won in the first round.
