The Festival of the Arts in Laguna Beach, California, United States, hosts an annual festival called the Pageant of the Masters. Tableaux vivants, also known as "living pictures," are the event's calling card; these are recreations of famous paintings and sculptures performed by actual people who, with the help of costumes, makeup, headdresses, props, and backgrounds, seem almost identical to the originals.

1932, organizers put on their first Festival of Arts, and in 1933, they staged their first Pageant. Lolita Perine, an artist, conceived the idea for a living work of art at the second Festival of Arts in 1933. She had the citizens of Laguna Beach dress up like famous artists and pose in front of a huge frame.

The Festival's organizers formally launched the "Spirit of the Masters Pageant" the next year, and it was performed again in 1934. However, it was an amateur effort of low quality at the time. Started on July 7, 2022, the 89th annual Pageant of the Masters continued through September 2, 2022. More than a quarter of a million people attend the Pageant annually.
