Falcon Stadium is an outdoor stadium located in Colorado Springs, CO. Falcon Stadium currently serves as home to the U.S. Air Force Falcons (NCAA). The stadium was open to the public on September 22, 1962, with a $3.5 million construction cost. It is under the ownership of the U.S. Air Force while operated by U.S. Air Force Academy.
The Falcon Stadium underwent expansions in 1972 and 1990. It was renovated in 2005-2016. Praeger-Kavanaugh-Waterbury designed the original architecture of the building, whereas Slater Paul Architects designed the renovated venue. The stadium has a current seating capacity of 46,692 people. In addition to sports, the venue also hosts musical concerts.
Falcon Stadium had natural grass in the initial 44 years of its existence, which was replaced by synthetic FieldTurf in 2006. Along with the turf field, some other major additions done to the stadium were permanent lighting (2002), a video screen (2004), and a new sound system (2006). The venue is also responsible for hosting the graduation ceremonies of the U.S. Air Force Academy every spring.
