Jones AT&T Stadium is an American outdoor athletic stadium located in Lubbock, Texas, on the campus of Texas Tech University. The venue was built in the style of Spanish Renaissance architecture. The stadium is home to the Texas Tech Red Raiders football team of the Big 12 Conference. The venue opened on November 29, 1947, as Clifford B. and Audrey Jones Stadium. The site had a seating capacity of 27,000 at that time. Jones AT&T Stadium is owned and operated by Texas Tech University.
The first expansion that raised the seating capacity for the Jones AT&T Stadium took place in 1959. In 1972, the venue underwent another expansion that raised the seating capacity to 48,000. In 2000, the stadium changed its name due to a naming rights agreement with SBC Communications who provided large funds. It was then led by Texas Tech alumnus and CEO Edward Whitacre Jr.
Jones AT&T Stadium saw another upgrade with a $2 million inner field wall in 2006 that matches the traditional Texas Tech style brick façade. On October 24, 2009, the general admission seating was opened in the north end of the venue, increasing the seating capacity to 58,930. Since its inception, the venue has seen a few changes in its surface. From 1947 to 1969, the venue had a natural grass surface, AstroTurf from 1970 to 2005, and since 2006, the venue has a FieldTurf surface.
