Genesee Theatre is located in Waukegan, Illinois, and operates as a concert hall. Construction for the venue broke ground in September 1927 and first opened for the public on December 25, 927. Edward P. Steinberg completed the architecture of the building, which has a seating capacity of 2,403. The theatre serves as a host to numerous musical artists and shows. The venue was built by A.L. Brumund, H.C. Burnett, and D.T. Webb with a mission of providing high-quality entertainment to the community along with commercial and living spaces. The interior of the theatre is of Spanish Renaissance Style.
Genesee Theatre was initially closed in 1989 but later re-opened on December 3, 2004, after a $23 million renovation. The theatre stood the test of time, despite the venue's changes. The Genesee Theatre is reminiscent of the hope and beauty of the early 20th century, outside and within its walls. It remains a center of the Waukegan community to date.
A part of the music video for "Donk" by Soulja Boy was shot during a theater performance. Morrissey also shot a part of the video for his single entitled "I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris" in 2007.
