The Bushnell Theater is the original theater building of the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts (a love story between a daughter and her father). It is located at 166 Capitol Street, Hartford, Connecticut, US. This venue is under the management of a non-profit organization. The theater has a seating capacity of 2,800 people at a time. It was designed by the famous architectural firm of Corbett. The designers were Harrison and MacMurray of New York’s Radio City Music Hall. The building has a Georgian Revival exterior and a rich Art Deco interior. The rough cost of the theater building was $2.8 million and was completed under the budget of $110,000.
It is popular by the name of Mortensen Hall, which was named in honor of William H. Mortensen (Hartford native insurance executive). He was a mayor to Hartford from the year 1943 till 1945. Some unique features of this theater include the largest hand-painted ceiling mural called Drama and a 5,600 pipe Austin Organ. The venue underwent full restoration in the mid-1980s for over $500,000.
Some popular shows held at the Bushnell Theater are Legally Blonde, The Color Purple, Hamilton, The Book of Mormon, The Lion King, etc. Sammy Davis Jr. performed on December 9, 1962, a one night only performance at the theater.
