9:30 Club, known as 9:30, is a live music venue and a nightclub located at 815 V St NW, Washington, DC. Rolling Stone Magazine declared this club as one of the 10 best live music venues in America in 2018. The concert hall opened to the general public on May 31, 1980. It has a seating capacity of approximately 1,200 people. Currently, the club is owned and operated by Richard Heinecke and Seth Hurwitz. In December 1995, the old 9:30 Club closed its doors and reopened on January 5, 1996. The club name was derived from the original street address of the venue, along with the venue's initial opening time, which was also decided to be 9:30 PM. The 9:30 Club has been awarded "Nightclub of the Year" by Pollstar 13 times. It also won the Top Club awards from 2007 through 2012 Billboard Touring Awards.
On May 31, 1980, the venue hosted its first show featuring local, new wave band famous as Tiny Desk Unit and Massachusetts jazz-punk band the Lounge Lizards. An American rock band called The Smashing Pumpkins performed a concert on January 5, 1996. Public Broadcasting Service launched Live at 9:30 in 2016. D.C. acts that played at the venue in the 2000s include Vertical Horizon in 2004 and Wale in 2010. Popular performers and bands who ruled the stage here include Maren Morris, Emmet Swimming, Bob Dylan, Red Hot Chili Peppers, John Frusciante, Jimmy Eat World, The Beastie Boys, and several more.
The club celebrated its 35th birthday in January 2016 by opening its door for an exhibition featuring the nightclub's previous history, the 9:30 World's Fair.
