Kenan Memorial Stadium is a football stadium located at 78 Stadium Drive, Chapel Hill, North Carolina. It serves home to the North Carolina Tar Heels. The stadium opened to the general public on November 12, 1927, with a total construction cost of $303,000. It has a seating capacity of around 50,500 people. The venue is owned and operated by the University of North Carolina. Since its opening, the stadium has undergone several expansion projects and renovations. The place is named after William R. Kenan, who provided most of the funds for its construction.
North Carolina Tar Heels won their first game played at the Kenan Memorial Stadium, defeating Davidson College, 27-0, on November 27, 1927. The first game hosted at the Stadium brought in 9,000 spectators. The stadium was dedicated to the Kenan on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 1927, where the Tar Heels defeated the University of Virginia Cavaliers, 14-13. The most massive crowd of 62,000 people was recorded at Kenan Stadium in 1927 when Tar Heels hosted the Florida State Seminoles. From 1992 to 1999, the Tar Heels football team sold out every game. The fireworks were shot from the top of Kenan Field House from 2007 to 2010 whenever the Tar Heels score and win. An Irish rock band U2 performed a concert at the stadium on April 23, 1983, in front of 4,000 fans.
