The Nutcracker
The Ellie Caulkins Opera House is located at 1400 Curtis Street, Denver, Colorado. This venue is a part of the Denver Performing Art Complex which was opened to the public on July 7, 1908. It has a seating capacity of 2,225 people at a time. This auditorium underwent renovations in the years 1956, 1992, and 2005. The venue is under the ownership of the Denver Performing Arts Complex (City and County of Denver). It was formerly known as Quigg Newton Denver Municipal Auditorium and the Municipal Auditorium. It was the largest opera house in the USA other than the Madison Square Garden in New York when it was known as the Municipal Auditorium.
The main purpose of this building, previously, was to facilitate concerts, theatres, operas, and other social and political events. For many years, the venue hosted the annual Music Week as a yearly event in the 1920s and 30s. In 1921, along with many other performances, the theater had numerous performances by well-known artists such as Flotow's Martha along with mostly all the opera concerts, local opera productions, and visiting opera companies.
The auditorium also includes some other venues within such as the Chambers Grant Salon that can be accessed from Ellie's main lobby with a capacity of 750 people. It is used for the refreshment servings and meetings. Another faculty is the Studio Loft, which is the event, rehearsal, and performance space. In 2002 the auditorium was renamed as "Quigg Newton Denver municipal auditorium." Later it was rebuilt and named in honor of the first lady of opera in Denver as, "Ellie Caulkins opera house." Some of the famous events held in this venue are, The Marriage of Figaro, As one, The Magic Flute, Aida, The scarlet letter, etc.
