The Plaza Theatre is located at 125 W Mills Ave, El Paso, Texas. It is famous for its National historical value and generally known landmarks in the city. The theatre is classified into two venues named Kendall Kidd Performance Hall (seats 2,050) and Philanthropy Theatre (seats 200). It is owned by the City of El Paso and operated by SMG. The architecture of the venue is designed by Dunne that is based on French Colonial Revival. It was built and opened to the general public in 1930. The theatre was reopened to the general public on 17 March 2006 with the renovation cost of $38 million.
The venue hosts Broadway productions, Musical concerts, individual Performers and the annual Plaza Classic Film Festival. Before the Plaza was constructed, there was a large produce Warehouse. It was purchased by Louis L. Dent in 1927 who turned the property into Plaza Theatre, famous as the first air conditioning theatre in the US. The Plaza Theatre was then purchased by Interstate in 1933.
The first stage drama that was acted at the theatre was Richelieu in the year 1934 ( cast included Dallas Anderson, John Davenport). Another show hosted by the venue was Gone with the Wind (1939). The Plaza hosted the World Premiere of Film El Paso(1949) and also aired Tom Lea’s ‘The Brave Bulls’’. Some famous entertainers that performed at the Plaza named Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, Ballymore Family, Sally Rand, Tallulah Bankhead, Hopalong Cassidy, John Wayne, the Marx brothers, Rita Moreno, Henry Fonda, Tom Mix, and James Stewart.
