Currently, the Spokane Public Facilities District owns this center. On May 1, 1974, the center opened to the public after two years of construction. A gala took place which included performances by New York City Ballet's Edward Villella, Lucette Aldous, and Roberta Peters of the Metropolitan Opera.

It has hosted world-class events such as "The Lion King" and Jerry Seinfeld to "Phantom of the Opera." Apart from that many ballets, symphony concerts, grand opera, country, and rock music spectaculars, roadshows, musical stage productions, conventions and lectures, travelogues, the impressive modernization are also hosted at the First Interstate Center for the Arts.
