Located in Des Moines, Iowa, the Hoyt Sherman Place was built in 1877. It was initially the home of Hoyt Sherman. After his death in 1904, it stood empty. It became the clubhouse of the Des Moines Women's Club in 1907. This club installed an art gallery that became the first art museum for the public in the city. It was 1923, the construction of 1400 seat auditorium was built for club programs.
It was again in 1995; the Des Moines Women's Club founded the Hoyt Sherman Place Foundation. The house and all art and artifacts ownership were given to the foundation by the Des Moines Women's Club. In 1977, the Hoyt Sherman Place was added to the National Register of Historic Places. In 2015, Hoyt Sherman Place was introduced into the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
In 2003, the Hoyt Sherman Place renovated and new features installed which include state-of-the-art electrical fixtures, heating, and air conditioning systems, hand-stenciling finishes on the mansion walls, refinishing the original hardwood floors, and launching our Art Restoration campaign. This place is famous for hosting alive with concerts, art exhibits, tours, weddings, and business affairs.
