The Ed Mirvish Theatre is a famous historic film and play theatre located in Downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was previously known as Pantages Theatre, Imperial Theatre, Imperial Six, and Canon Theatre. The theatre's current name is selected in honor of Ed Mirvish, a well-known theatre impresario and businessman. The Ed Mirvish Theatre was first opened for the public in 1920. It is under the ownership of Mirvish Productions and has a seating capacity of 2,300. The venue underwent construction in 1972 and 1989.
Thomas W. Lamb initially did the architecture of the Ed Mirvish Theatre. During the 1972 renovations, Mandel Sprachman took the responsibility of architecture. The theatre was first opened as a combination vaudeville and motion picture house and was the largest cinema in Canada. The theatre was also one of the most elegant venues across the nation. The Ed Mirvish Theatre was listed on the City of Toronto Heritage Property Inventory by the City of Toronto on October 1, 1979. Later on June 13, 1988, the property was designated under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act, which then resulted in heritage production of the venue.
