The Elsinore Theatre is a famous American theatre located in Salem, Oregon. It is part of Salem Downtown State Street – Commercial Street Historic District and has a seating capacity of 1,290. The venue was built in 1926, and it opened for the public on May 28, 1926. The building's architecture was done by Lawrence & Holford, although the architectural style was influenced by late 19th and early 20th Century Revivals and Tudor Gothic. It was meant to resemble the castle in the city of Elsinore from the play Hamlet. Ellis F. Lawrence by Shakespeare. The Elsinore Theatre features a Mighty Wurlitzer theatre organ similar to the original and stained glass by the Povey Brothers.
The Elsinore Theatre was originally built for silent films and live performances. The sound movies arrived at the theater in 1926. Until 1987, the theater was considered one of the only three active movie theaters in downtown Salem. The venue was sold to Act III Theatres in around 1989. It enjoyed appearances by many notable actors such as James Earl Jones and Gregory Peck. The Elsinore Theatre was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994 and celebrated its 80th anniversary in May 2006.
