The Greek Theatre, to which complete name is the William Randolph Hearst Greek Theatre, is located at 2001 Gayley Road, Berkeley, California. The amphitheater was opened to the public on September 24, 1903, with a seating capacity of around 8,500 people at a time. The venue is used as a popular outdoor summer concert arena. The Greek Theatre is owned by the University of California, Berkeley, while it is operated by Another Planet Entertainment.
The architecture of the theatre was designed by John Galen Howard. The architectural design was based on Greek revival. The place was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. In May 2012, the expansion of the arena took place.
The center has hosted hundreds of events and concerts over the years along with various musical and theatrical events. The amphitheater has also hosted some notable events such as The Berkeley Pop, Jazz festival, world music, and rock concerts. Speakers who have spoken at the theatre are William Randolph Hearst, the Dalai Lama, and President Theodore Roosevelt. It has also witnessed the departmental graduation ceremonies, Graduating Seniors Convocation, Commencements, Big game bonfire rally, etc.
