The State Theatre is a beautiful vintage building and a significant venue in the city. It is located at Hennepin Avenue, Minneapolis, Minnesota. The State Theatre was opened to the general public in 1921. The theater has a seating capacity of about 2,181 people at a time. Chicago architect J.E.O designed the State Theatre. The venue is under the ownership of the Hennepin Theatre Trust. The Historic Theatre Group operates it. It was considered as the most advanced and elaborate theater in the United States.
The State Theatre was used as a movie house, and it also hosted ballets, concerts, and vaudeville shows. The opening night of the State Theatre featured a silent film, travelogue, and newsreel. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid set a national record at the State for the longest run in America at the venue. Tommy was the final picture show on new year’s eve.
The State Theatre has hosted Broadway touring productions such as Sweeney Todd, Avenue Q, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream coat. Various notable concerts performed here by famous stars such as Gordon Lightfoot and Patti Smith. Author and Adventure speaker series along with films including the world premiere of the Minnesota based movie, Grumpy Old Man, etc. were featured at the venue. Jingle with Arnold Schwarzenegger was also featured at the theatre.
