This theater is located at 50 East Ida B. Wells Drive, Chicago, United States. It is a performance and a music venue that is located inside the Auditorium Building. It is under the ownership of Roosevelt University with a seating capacity of 3,875. The auditorium theatre is designed by Denmark Adler and Louis Sullivan. The building design is inspired by the Richardsonian Romanesque style. The inauguration ceremony of this venue took place on December 9, 1889, and the grand-opening evening was highlighted by the appearance of opera star Madame Adelina Patti. The theatre was home to Chicago Grand Opera Company and Chicago Symphony Orchestra along with hosting indoor baseball games.
The Auditorium Theatre was bankrupted and closed in 1941 which was later taken up by Chicago for World War II servicemen’s center. The theatre was reopened in 1967 with a gala performance, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” (by New York City Ballet’s production). The venue hosts many dances, educational programs, concerts, and music events all over the year. It is the home to Joffrey Ballet since 1998. Some famous concerts held at this venue are Wind and Wuthering tour (1977), Selling England by the Pound Tour (by Genesis Band), etc.
