Longwood Gardens is a botanical garden located in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. It consists of over 1,077 acres of woodlands, gardens, and meadows. The botanical garden is situated in the Brandywine Creek Valley, and it is said to be one of the premier horticultural display gardens in the entire nation. Longwood Gardens is open to visitors year-round, where people enjoy exotic and native plants and horticulture (both indoor and outdoor). Performances and events and seasonal and themed attractions, courses, educational lectures, and workshops are also part of the venue.
According to the history of the Longwood Gardens, the native Lenni Lenape tribe fished its streams, planted its fields, and hunted its forests for thousands of years. The evidence of the existence of the tribe can be found in quartz spear points of the garden. Longwood Gardens consists of varied outdoor gardens, ranging from 20 indoor formal to naturalistic landscape design gardens. There are also heated greenhouses and 4,600 different plants and trees, along with some beautiful fountains.
Longwood Gardens hosts hundreds of horticultural and performing arts events on an annual basis. They range from gardening demonstrations, courses, flower shows, children's programs to concerts, musical theatre, fountain shows, organ and carillon recitals, and fireworks displays. The venue also serves as the host to an extensive Christmas light display during the holiday season. Since 2012, the Longwood Gardens have attracted more than 1 million visitors every year. Some of the notable performing arts events at the venue include debut Open Air Theatre by Du Pont, Metropolitan Opera sopranos, and John Philip Sousa.
