Historic Crew Stadium, which was previously known as MAPFRE Stadium, is a soccer-specific stadium located at 1 Black and Gold Boulevard, Columbus, Ohio. The venue is home to the famous soccer club, Columbus Crew SC of Major League Soccer. Mapfre Stadium is the second soccer-specific stadium built in the country after the Steel Athletic Field (Pennsylvania). The construction of the venue began on August 14, 1998, costing a total amount of $42.9 million. The stadium opened to the general public on May 15, 1999. Historic Crew Stadium has a seating capacity of approximately 19,968 people for soccer and 30,000 for concerts. Currently, the venue is owned and operated by the Columbus Crew SC. NBBJ designed the beautiful architecture of the building.
Historic Crew Stadium is known to host amateur and professional soccer, American football, and rugby. The venue is a regular host to the home team, Columbus Crew SC. The Columbus Crew played against the New England Revolutions as the opening match of the venue. Major League Soccer All-Star Game in 2000 and 2005, along with the MLS Cup Championship in 2001, was also hosted by the Historic Crew Stadium.
The U.S. Open Cup Final in 1999 and 2002 was held at the venue. The stadium also hosted several games of the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup. Five consecutive World Cup qualifying matches of U.S. men's national soccer team against Mexico were played at the Historic Crew Stadium. The venue also serves host to a variety of musical concerts, including some remarkable performances by Kenny Chesney and Linkin Park.
