The venue is home to the famous soccer club, Columbus Crew SC of Major League Soccer. Mapfre Stadium is the second soccer-specific stadium built in the country after the Steel Athletic Field (Pennsylvania). The construction of the venue began on August 14, 1998, costing a total amount of $42.9 million. The stadium opened to the general public on May 15, 1999. Historic Crew Stadium has a seating capacity of approximately 19,968 people for soccer and 30,000 for concerts. Currently, the venue is owned and operated by the Columbus Crew SC.
