The Cajundome is a multi-purpose arena that is located at 444 Cajundome Boulevard Lafayette, Louisiana. This arena has a seating capacity of 13,500 people for concerts, 11,550 for Basketball, 12,121 for Pro Wrestling, and 11,433 for Ice Hockey. It is a multi-surface arena that is under the ownership of the University of Louisiana and operated by the Cajundome Commission. The arena is the largest college basketball arena in the Louisiana state. It was opened on 10th November 1985 and was constructed at the cost of $60 million. The architecture is a masterpiece by Neil Nehrbass. It was renovated in 2016 with significant up-gradation.
The Cajundome arena is home to various university events including the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Men’s and Women’s basketball programs. It hosts many regional concerts and some of the special events like WWE events, annual outdoor Cajun Heartland State Fair, etc. It also earned the nickname, “The Frozen Swamp” when it was home to Louisiana IceGators. The arena has hosted Sun Belt Conference (1998, 1999, and 2007) along with Jr. Beta Club Louisiana State conventions.
A new convention center by the name of the Cajundome Convention Center was added to the arena in 2002 with a seating capacity of 2,118 (for outdoor events). This venue is used for various trade shows, ceremonies, public receptions, meetings, etc. It is home to annual Lafayette Home, Green show, Louisiana’s Future Business Leader of America State Leadership Conference. In 2005, the arena became one of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s evacuee shelters which served relief for thousands of people. Some top crowds held at this venue are 11,137 vs. New Orleans (02/01/92), 09,153 vs. New Orleans (01/05/91), 09,086 vs. Lamar (03/01/86), etc.
