Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles at Butler Bulldogs Mens Basketball

Hinkle Fieldhouse is a famous basketball arena on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana. The arena was completed in 1928 and was said to be the largest basketball arena in the United States until 1950. From 1928 to 1966, the arena was called Butler Fieldhouse, although it was renamed Hinkle Fieldhouse in 1966 to honor Butler’s longtime coach and athletic director, Paul D. “Tony” Hinkle. Hinkle Fieldhouse is also the largest basketball arena in NCAA’s Division I.

Hinkle Fieldhouse had a seating capacity of more than 15,000 when initially built but has since been reduced to 9,100. The arena was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, and in 1987, it was designated as the United States National Historic Landmark. The venue has been the home court for the Butler Bulldogs men’s basketball team and the annual championship games’ location from 1928 to 1971 for the Indiana High School Boys Basketball Tournament.

In 2010, the Butler Bulldogs men’s basketball team also won the Horizon League conference title at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The venue is used for basketball games and many other athletic events, including national equestrian events, six-day bicycle races, and professional tennis matches. Hinkle Fieldhouse has also served as an “unofficial convention center” for religious leaders and politicians such as Jesse Jackson, Wendell Willkie, Thomas E. Dewey, and Billy Graham. Furthermore, the infamous movie Hoosiers (1986) filmed the championship game in the film at the venue.
