It replaced the Heart O' Texas Coliseum, which served as the school's primary indoor athletic facility. The inaugural event held at the Ferrell Center was a political rally for former President Ronald Reagan. The arena has also hosted several other famous acts on its stages, such as Garth Brooks, Keith Urban, George Strait, Hootie and the Blowfish, Neil Diamond, Steven Curtis Chapman, Michael W. Smith, and Dolly Parton.
Some of the famous world leaders who have spent time on Ferrell Center's stage include Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Colin Powell, former President George W. Bush, and First Lady Barbara Bush. They all were part of the President's Forum Lecture Series.
