It is a multi-purpose arena with a seating capacity that is distributed as follows; football arena 17,297, Basketball 18,972, Ice hockey 17,544 and for concerts, it is 19,252 along with 72 executive suites. It is a multi-surface arena that is under the ownership of the City of Kansas while it is operated by Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG). The venue was opened to the local public on October 10, 2007, having a construction cost of $276 million. The architectural work for this arena is carried out by HOK Sport, 360 Architecture, Ellerbe Becket, and Rafael Architects. The site is home to the Big 12 Men's Basketball Tournament.

It houses the College Basketball Experience and the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame.
