The Rushmore Plaza Civic Center is a type of exhibition center located at 444 North Mount Rushmore Road, Rapid City, South Dakota. It was opened for the general public on June 21, 1977. A total of $32.6 million was spent on its construction. The venue is owned and operated by the City of Rapid City. It contains a Fine Arts Theater, multi-purpose arenas, two large convention or exhibit halls, and numerous other meeting rooms all under the same building. The venue was expanded in 2008. It has a seating capacity of 10,000 people at Barnett Arena, 5,119 people for Hockey, 6,200 people for Basketball, and 7,000 people for Concerts at a time. Four Front Design Inc designed the architecture of the venue.
Rushmore Plaza is capable of hosting a diverse range of events, be it a convention, a meeting, sports, or concerts. The venue is known for hosting almost all of the events of the Black Hills Region. It is home to the North West Nebraska, South Dakota, and South West North Dakota. The opening ceremony of the Rushmore Plaza featured a concert by Elvis Presley. The Rushmore Plaza mostly hosts the annual functions or tournaments of South Dakota High School Activities, Lakota Nation Invitational, the Black Hills Home Builders Expo, Association Tournaments and the ice hockey team, Rapid City Rush of ECHL. Events at the venue include the performances of Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band along with Lewis Black.
