10,000 Maniacs was established in 1981 as an American alternative rock ensemble. The group has released nine studio albums, six extended plays, and five live albums. Between 1987 and 1993, they had their most successful period, with four albums that reached the top 50 on the US charts: In My Tribe (1987), Blind Man's Zoo (1989), Our Time in Eden (1992), and MTV Unplugged (1993).

Original lead singer and composer Natalie Merchant decided to go solo after the recording, but before MTV Unplugged came out, the other members carried on with the band.

On April 28, 2015, Cleopatra Records released Twice Told Tales, featuring classic covers from the British Isles. Reunited with the band as creative director and guitarist for the record and tour that followed, founding member John Lombardo was a welcome addition. On June 3, 2016, 10,000 Maniacs released Playing Favorites, their debut live album featuring lead vocals by Mary Ramsey.

Mary Ramsey and Jeff Erickson announced their departure from 10,000 Maniacs in July 2023 to pursue other endeavors, while Leigh Nash was confirmed as the band's new lead singer. Additionally, 10,000 Maniacs revealed that guitarist Matt Slocum would join the band. Sixpence None the Richer was founded by both Slocum and Nash.
