Tesla is a Californian-based American rock band from Sacramento. Brian Wheat (bass) and Frank Hannon (guitar) first created the band City Kidd in late 1981; from there, Tesla was born. In 1984, the band added Jeff Keith on vocals, Tommy Skeoch on guitar, and Troy Luccketta on drums, completing the iconic configuration that played on every record and tour.

Tesla's star began to rise during the golden age of '80s hair metal. They had success with their first album, 1986's Mechanical Resonance, thanks to the hits "Modern Day Cowboy" and "Little Suzi" (originally by Ph.D.). The band's second album, The Great Radio Controversy (1989), featured the top 10 hit "Love Song" and reached number 18 on the Billboard 200 album chart.

Their subsequent albums, Psychotic Supper (1991) and Bust a Nut (1994) performed well enough on the album charts, peaking at numbers 13 and 20, But they failed to produce any radio singles.

After breaking up in 1996, the band reunited in 2000 for a live tour and record titled Replugged. Since 2006, when Skeoch departed and was replaced by Dave Rude on guitars, the band has continued to record and play. The single "Time to Rock!" was published in June 2022, making it their most recent release. At least 14 million copies of Tesla records have been sold in the US.
