The Wave is the nickname for the professional women's soccer team San Diego Wave, sometimes called Wave FC or simply the Wave. The club joined the National Women's Soccer League for the 2022 season as an expansion team. American businessman Ron Burkle owns Wave FC. In 2023, the Wave finished with the best record in the NWSL, earning them the Shield as league champions. This is the team's first trophy.

In its first year of existence, the club played its home games at Torero Stadium on the UC San Diego campus. For the final two home games of the 2022 season, the team relocated to Snapdragon Stadium, part of San Diego State University's growing Mission Valley campus. On September 17, a record-breaking audience of 32,000 watched Wave FC play their home opener versus regional rival and fellow 2022 NWSL entry Angel City FC.

The team unveiled its new logo for the 2022 season on December 15, 2021. A press statement stated, "The crest, covered in a shield, is a sign of strength for the city and team to stand behind proudly. The crest of a mighty wave set against the deep blues of the Pacific Ocean is prominently shown as the club's logo.
