Caroline or Change is a musical that was first released in May 1992 at New York’s Off-Broadway Public Theater. Directed by George C. Wolfe who continued to workshop the musical until its opening on November 30, 2003, and closing on February 1, 2004.

The musical book and lyrics were done by Tony Kushner and score by Jeanine Tesori, combining spirituals, blues, classical music, Motown, folk music, and Jewish Klezmer. The musical ran both on Broadway and Off-Broadway; as well as in London.
Here is a snippet of the play. One hot day in 1962 down in Lake Charles, Louisiana. A black maid, Caroline, is working for the Gellman family at just $30 each week. She is down in the basement doing the family’s laundry and the 8-year-old son Noah Gellman is deeply attracted to Caroline. Noah’s mom had recently died of cancer, and his father remarried, Rose, who is not his stepmother.

Caroline, a no-nonsense mother of four, allows Noah to light her cigarette, which they both share for one hour each day as a secret just between them. Caroline is also asking the Gellman’s family to give her a raise, but the lady of the house, Rose refuses and only allows her to take extra food back home to her children.
