Cirque du Soleil, also known as "Sun Circus" in Quebec and "Circus of the Sun" in French, is a Canadian entertainment business producing more modern circus shows than any other organization worldwide. Former street performers Guy Laliberté and Gilles Ste-Croix established it in Baie-Saint-Paul on June 16, 1984. It is now located in Montreal's inner-city suburb of Saint-Michel.

In 2015, 90% of Cirque du Soleil, bought out by TPG Capital and Fosun Industrial Holdings; Laliberté kept 10%. On June 30, 2015, the Canadian government made the deal green-lit. Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec paid $75 million to Laliberté in February 2020 for his 10% stake in the firm.

Among the many accolades bestowed upon the company's works are three Drama Desk Awards, seven Primetime Emmys, many Geminis, a Daytime Emmy, a Juno, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The National Arts Centre prize (as a companion to the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards) in 2000 and the Walk of Fame induction in 2002 were bestowed upon Cirque du Soleil in Canada.
