The French musical Roméo et Juliette: de la Haine à l'Amour was composed and adapted by Gérard Presgurvic from William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. On January 19, 2001, it had its world debut in Paris. With costumes designed by Dominique Borg and sets created by Petrika Ionesco, the production was directed and choreographed by Redha. Universal Music, GLEM, and Gérard Louvin were the producers. 

One way the plot varies from Shakespeare's original is in the specifics of the lovers' deaths. Several new characters appear for dramatic effect, including Death (in French, Belgium, Japan, the Netherlands, and Moscow only) and the Poet (in French only). 

In the Hungarian adaptation, Lady Capulet's part is substantially expanded, and she even has an affair with her servant. However, it's the transformation of Tybalt, from a completely evil persona to a more pathetic one, that truly tugs at the heartstrings. His unrequited passion for Juliet, born from a dark childhood and a life filled with hate, makes him a more sympathetic character.
