The Freedom Hall Civic Center was open to the general public on July 5th, 1974, with a construction cost of $5 million. The venue has a seating capacity of 8,500 for significant events and approximately 6,149 for basketball. The arena is under the ownership of Johnson City, Tennessee. The site became the basketball venue for East Tennessee State University at the start of 2014. The Freedom Hall Civic Center was built to serve as an entertainment venue and an additional space for the middle and high schools located on the property. It has been used for theatrical productions, sporting events, ice shows, concerts, and a rodeo venue over the years.

The Freedom Hall Civic Center has hosted several events and concerts in which the former and current entertainment includes acts such as the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey, a circus that took place in 2008.
