Death Cab for Cutie is a rock band with the lineup of Ben Gibbard, Nick Harmer, Jason McGerr, Dave Depper, and Zac Rae. Plans, the band's 2005 debut album for Atlantic Records, was certified platinum. Chris Walla, the band's founding guitarist, left in 2014 after 17 years. The band announced the release of a Bandcamp-exclusive EP titled "The Georgia E.P." for a single day on December 2, 2020.

With their cover of "Waiting for the Sunrise" from Yoko Ono's Ocean Child: Songs of Yoko Ono, released in February 2022, the band released their first new music since the release of The Georgia E.P. The band announced on May 11, 2022, that their tenth studio album would be titled Asphalt Meadows, and it was released on September 16, 2022. This followed the completion of recording on May 5, 2022.

The single "Roman Candles" from the album and news of a North American tour with Low and Yo La Tengo were released on the same day. The band set off on an arena tour in the fall of 2023 alongside another of Gibbard's projects, The Postal Service, playing Transatlanticism and Give Up in their entirety in honor of the album's 20th anniversary.
