Ruben Blades (July 16, 1948) is a Panamanian politician, singer, composer, musician, actor, and activist. He is professionally known by his stage name, Ruben Blades, born in Panama City, Panama. His first record released in the United States was 1970's De Panamá a New York, which included the Pete Rodriguez orchestra. Some of his most popular albums include Rubén Blades and Son del Solar... Live!, Amor y Control, Escenas, Salsa Big Band, Metiendo Mano!, and Siembra (1978). ASCAP and WhyHunger honored Blades with the Harry Chapin Humanitarian Award in June 2011.

Blades was the final performance at Mexico's Festival Internacional Cervantino in 2014. Blades' album Tangos was named the best Latin pop album of 2015 by the Grammys. Blades has said he plans to run for president of Panama again in 2019. Blades began playing the recurring role of Daniel Salazar on the AMC spinoff series Fear the Walking Dead in 2015. "So Close, Yet So Far" is the second episode and is also Blades' debut.

Among the many Puerto Rican musicians who contributed to Lin-Manuel Miranda's "Almost Like Praying" charity song in 2017 to benefit Hurricane Maria victims, Blades was one of the most prominent. Blades was named the inaugural NYU Steinhardt Dean's Scholar-in-Residence in September 2018.
