Planet Bluegrass hosts the Telluride Bluegrass Festival every year in Telluride, Colorado. The festival's main focus has always been bluegrass, but it frequently showcases music from various related styles. John Herndon, J.B. & Helen Matiotti, Kooster McAllister, and Fred Shellman (of the Fall Creek Boys) organized the inaugural Telluride Bluegrass Festival in 1974 in Telluride, Colorado, inspired by the popularity of the 1973 festival. About a thousand people showed up to the festival that year.

The festival was limited to 10,000 attendees annually and became an annual event. The Boulder public television station recorded the concert in 1980 and released two CDs of the recordings, as the Library of Congress reported. Since its start, the Bluegrass Festival has gone through five different management teams, the most recent of which is Planet Bluegrass' Craig Ferguson.

Despite multiple remodels, the stage and concession stands remain in their original locations. The daily capacity has been set at 12,000, with a total of 48,000 for the festival's four days as of at least 2013. Flooding in 2013 affected the festival, but in 2014, everything was back to normal. In 2015, the Telluride Bluegrass and Country Music Festival was the event's official name.
