The rock musical Jagged Little Pill, by Academy Award-winner Diablo Cody, was inspired by the 1995 Alanis Morissette’s album of the same name. Morissette, alongside Glen Ballard, also provides the music and lyrics to the musical performed to-date.

The musical is about the Healys, who paint a facade of a happy suburban family made up of dad Steve, mom Mary Jane and their teen son Nick and teen daughter Frankie. Mary Jane has a chronic obsession to paint her family, the perfect family picture. Yet in reality, things are going out of control; she is secretly fighting with drug addiction, her relationship with her husband is sexless and distant.

Their daughter Frankie (adopted and the only black person in the family) is struggling with feelings of alienation as her colorblind mom keeps eliminating her black identity. Frankie is also on a quest to discover her queerness alongside her best friend Jo, who is genderqueer. On the other hand, Nick is under a lot of pressure from being the golden child of the family. Things get worse for Nick when his best friend Andrew is accused of raping Jo; Frankie’s best friend. In the musical, the Healys are struggling to keep face like things are picture-perfect while in reality, they are falling apart.

The Jagged Little Pill musical was premiered at the American Repertory Theater in May last year. The premiere was directed by the Tony Award-winner Diane Paulus and went ahead to get nine Grammy Award nominations; winning five including the Album of the Year category.
