The Metropolitan Opera, commonly known as the Met, is an American opera company founded in 1883 and is based in New York City. The opera company was formed as an alternative to the previously established Academy of Music opera house. The Met debuted in a brand-new building on 39th and Broadway and 1966, became a resident at the Metropolitan Opera House, located at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.

The Metropolitan Opera is operated by the non-profit Metropolitan Opera Association, where Peter Gelb serves as a general manager. The current music director of the company, as of 2018, is Yannick Nézet-Séguin. It is said to be the largest classical music organization in entire North America presenting approximately 27 different operas every year from September to May. The Metropolitan Opera presents other operas in a rotating repertory schedule consisting of a wide range of works, ranging from 8th-century Baroque and 19th-century Bel canto to the late 20th and 21st century’s Minimalism.

The Met's performing company consists of a large symphony-sized orchestra, children's choir, a chorus, and many supporting and leading solo singers. The opera company is famous for employing numerous free-lance dancers, musicians, actors, and other performers throughout the season.
