American rock band Breaking Benjamin was created in 1999 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. It was made by Benjamin Burnley (vocalist, guitarist, and drummer) and Jeremy Hummel (drummer). Aaron Fink on guitar and Mark Klepaski on bass were the band's original members. This group recorded Saturate (2002) and We Are Not Alone (2004) until this group replaced Hummel in 2005 by Chad Szeliga. Phobia (2006) and Dear Agony (2009) were the band's last studio albums before Burnley's chronic sickness forced them to take a long break in early 2010.

During the break, Burnley caused legal issues inside the band by releasing Shallow Bay: The Best of Breaking Benjamin (2011) without permission, which led to the firing of Fink and Klepaski. In 2013, Szeliga announced his departure, stating he had artistic issues with the company. Until the present lineup—guitarist Keith Wallen, bassist Aaron Bruch, drummer Shaun Foist, and backup vocalist Jasen Rauch—was unveiled in late 2014, Burnley was the only band member. 

The next year, in 2015, the band's album Dark Before Dawn debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and in 2018, the album Ember debuted at No. 3 on the same list. Aurora (2020), the band's subsequent compilation, followed both albums, featured new music, and revamped acoustic renditions of earlier tracks.

The band's discography includes over 19 million units sold, two gold records, three platinum albums, and six gold singles, all certified by the RIAA. They have also earned three platinum albums and two gold albums.
