In the city of Knoxville, Tennessee, there is a symphony orchestra known as the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra has been performing continuously since its founding in 1935, making it the oldest in the southeastern United States. Bertha Walburn Clark was the group's founding conductor and remained in that role until 1946.

Other former conductors include Lamar Stringfield (1946-1947 season), David Van Vactor (1947 to 1972), Arpad Joó (1973-1978), Zoltán Rozsnyai (1978-1985), Kirk Trevor (1985-2003), and Lucas Richman (2003-2015). Lucas Richman was the most recent conductor, serving from 2003-2015.

Since 2016, Aram Demirjian has served as the leader of the KSO. Within the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra (KSO), a youth orchestra known as the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra (KSYO) was founded in 1975 and has since achieved great success. James Fellenbaum is in charge of directing them at the moment.
