Stars is a Canadian indie pop/rock band. The current group lineup includes Chris McCarron, Patrick McGee, Chris Seligman, Evan Cranley, Amy Millan, and Torquil Campbell. The first Stars recording, Nightsongs, was recorded by Torquil Campbell and Christopher Seligman in New York in 1999. Evan Cranley, a longtime acquaintance, was brought in to play bass when the band started performing live. Cranley then asked Amy Millan to join the group.

The four musicians spent some time in New York before relocating to Montreal, where they started recording their second studio album, Heart. They recruited Patrick Mcgee as their drummer after meeting him in Montreal. The Heart was published on the up-and-coming label Arts&Crafts, where their pals in Broken Social Scene also recorded and were featured. Stars and Broken Social Scene frequently rotated members back and forth on their first joint tour of North America. In March of 2003, Heart debuted on the!earshot National Top 50 list.

In the dead of winter, a group of famous people leased a house in the Eastern Townships. Set Yourself on Fire was written during the group's month-and-a-half-long residence. The band and Tom McFall served as producers for the album, which was recorded at Studio Plateau in Montreal. The album was well-received by critics and, combined with the band's live shows, helped to launch them onto Canada's alternative rock scene.
