The Thunder are a professional basketball team from Oklahoma City, United States. Paycom Center is the site of the team's home games. The Seattle SuperSonics were founded and admitted to the NBA as an expansion team for the 1967–1968 season. After a lawsuit between the ownership group led by Clay Bennett and lawmakers in Seattle resulted in a settlement, the SuperSonics moved to Oklahoma City on July 3, 2008.

Paul George re-upped with the Thunder on July 6, 2018. The Thunder sent forward Carmelo Anthony and a first-round selection (protected until 2022) in a three-team deal to the Atlanta Hawks in July 2018. Thunder guard Dennis Schroder was traded to the Hawks from the 76ers in exchange for Luwawu-Cabarrot, a forward. The Thunder added guard Deonte Burton, who signed a two-way contract with the Thunder and the Thunder's G League affiliate, the Oklahoma City Blue.

The arena was renamed the Paycom Center for fifteen years after the company announced on July 27, 2021, that it had purchased the naming rights. Oklahoma City officially revealed plans to construct a new downtown arena for the Thunder on September 12, 2023, at an estimated cost of $900 million and an opening date of 2029.

After Diamond Sports Group, the parent company of Bally Sports, filed for bankruptcy in January 2024, the Thunder and Griffin Media came to an arrangement whereby the Thunder would air eight Friday night games on local over-the-air stations within their territory for the rest of the 2023–24 NBA season. The Thunder added Gordon Hayward, a former All-Star, to their roster for the 2023–24 season. Jalen Williams improved, Gilgeous Alexander was named to his second All-Star team, and youngster Chet Holmgren returned from injury and made an immediate impact. Their record for the regular season was 57-25 giving them first place in the Western Conference as they face off against the Pelicans in the first round of playoffs.

How well the Oklahoma City Thunder have played this season has been a surprise. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is playing at an All-Star level. The team has kept working on their young players, like Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren, who have shown flashes of brilliance. The Thunder strengthened their frontcourt by signing Branden Carlson to a two-way deal. Oklahoma City is still in the running for the playoffs and has done better than expected. The Thunder could surprise everyone as their young core develops by making the playoffs and continuing to grow well.
