Founded in 1992, the SEC Championship Game is a yearly football game that crowns the Southeastern Conference's season winner. The regular-season teams that win from the East and West divisions of the Southeastern Conference compete in the championship game. Having been played in Atlanta since 1994 (first at the Georgia Dome and now at Mercedes-Benz Stadium) on the first Saturday of December has become a tradition dating back to 2007.

After the SEC West team wore white jerseys in the previous nine SEC Championship Games (2000–2008), the West champion, Alabama, was the home team in 2009. Since the West champion has always played at home and LSU likes to wear white jerseys for home games, they were designated as the "home" team.

Once again from 2018–2020 because LSU again represented the West in 2019. Following the encounter in 2020, the overall record for the "home" team in SEC championship games will stand at 16–13.

Alabama defeated Cincinnati in the 2021 semifinals of the College Football Playoff to earn a trip to the CFP title game. They ultimately fell to Georgia in a repeat of the SEC Championship Game by a score of 33-18. For the first time, the team that didn't win their conference title won the national title in the same season.
