The University of Washington fields a collegiate football team known as the Huskies. Washington is a member of the Pac-12 Conference and plays in the NCAA's Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The University of Washington Huskies have played their home games at Husky Stadium since 1920. Initially, the school's home field was located in several different places. From 1895 on, home games were played on campus at Denny Field, and attendance increased from a few hundred to several thousand.

On November 29, 2021, Washington hired Kalen DeBoer as their new head football coach. DeBoer was the head coach at Fresno State for two years. DeBoer finished with an 11-2 record in his debut season with the Washington Capitals. With a 27-20 victory over Texas in the 2022 Alamo Bowl. Through the 2022 season, Washington has a 20-20-1 record in bowl games, with the lone loss coming in the unofficial Poi Bowl.

The presidents and chancellors of the Big Ten Conference decided overwhelmingly on August 4, 2023, to accept Washington and Oregon, two rivals from the Pac-12 Conference, as new members, beginning August 2, 2024.
