The comedy play Peter Pan Goes Wrong was written by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields of the Mischief Theatre company. They also wrote The Play That Goes Wrong (2012). After premiering at London's Pleasance Theatre in December 2013, the play went on a nationwide tour of the United Kingdom in 2014. Beginning on December 4, 2015, and running until February 26, 2016, the production ran at the Apollo Theatre in London's West End for the holiday season.

All-Canadian performances of the show are scheduled to begin on September 8, 2022, at Edmonton, Alberta's The Citadel Theatre, as was announced in January 2022. From February 26 through March 20, 2022, the show was broadcast. The show's August 2022 announcement stated that the same ensemble would move on to perform at Vancouver, Canada's The Arts Club Theatre Company. The start date was September 8, and the end date was October 16, 2022.

The musical moved to Broadway's Ethel Barrymore Theatre on March 17, 2023, for a limited run of 16 weeks beginning on April 19, 2023, opening night. The announcement was made on January 5, 2023.
